Journalism FAIL

20 July 2009 6 Comments

The winner of MasterChef Australia was announced at 9:30pm AEST, but at 8:57pm the Daily Telegraph published a spoiler ‘announcing’ Poh as the winner. In a display of journalistic ineptitude which is the hallmark of the Telegraph’s general standard in accuracy, the article is complete with quotes from the apparent winner and loser of tonight’s show.

“This is really a surreal feeling,” the 35-year-old, who hails from Norwood in South Australia toldThe Daily Telegraph.

“New ground is forged when you take risks and I’ve taken a few during this competition which have paid off.

After pocking the $100,000 cash prize and a cookbook deal Ling Yeow says she’s excited about launching her book Food From Mars.

With a heavy Asian influence, the MasterChef winner believes Australians have been waiting for a cookbook which explores her roots.

And there’s even a soundbite from the supposed loser:

Disappointed but humble, Goodwin praised her feisty opponent for her success.

“Poh’s a very deserving winner,” she said. “I’m proud of her, she’s a good friend and I wish her every success in the world.”

Erm.

At 9.42 they published the story of the real winner, and have been madly rewriting the original. The link is currently still titled ‘Poh-wins-masterchef’ and there’s some spectacularly bad cut and paste work happening:

Despite the Adelaide artist drawing on her luck of initially didn’t making it past the first audition, being asked back, eliminated from the top 20 and returning last night for the finally against  mother-of-three Julie Goodwin who won  the reality TV cooking contest.

Are we not hiring journalists who passed English anymore, Tele?

    Hilarious!

Another point but really off topic, is this quote “With a heavy Asian influence, the MasterChef winner believes Australians have been waiting for a cookbook which explores her roots.”

Err, this idea has been done and sold tens of thousands of copies worldwide and has been released in several different languages. Considering she is of Asian decent and is wanting to do exactly the same thing, the only reason it would sell would be because of her Masterchef fame.

Cool thanks for that Mike! I didn’t think to screen shot it until after they started changing it.

And so true Mel, Charmaine Solomon pretty much cornered that market 15 years ago, and many have walked that road since.

Well I am talking about my sister in law, considering she owns a restaurant that has been voted best Asian restaurant in Sydney for the past 3 years, I think that she has covered that market pretty well. She is currently penning her second book as is my brother in law and also her brother Luke.
I don’t know, there is just something about Poh that I didnt like. Mmmm, have to think on that one.
